SDG&E, a Southern California electric utility reached out to Flight Evolved to help them perform highly-detailed inspections of their distribution assets. Flight Evolved deployed teams into the field within two-weeks and pioneered both GIS workflows and software automation to accomplish the client’s objectives.

The key to success was to consistency was well-maintained operations. Our utility inspectors needed to capture uniform photos of each distribution pole to discover any current or potential equipment malfunctions or dangers. We standardized flight paths and photo collection so that each pole was captured in its entirety, minimizing costly re-mobilizations.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence

While our acquisition teams were capturing data, our office quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) team labeled and reviewed each photo using our proprietary AI software.

Tracking the Project

The final puzzle piece required us to transparently document project status and results for our client. Factors included landowner notifications, shotgun threats, accessing difficult areas, and multi-stakeholder sign-off. This required us to generate a robust tracking dashboard to maintain visibility. Our team developed a private GIS Dashboard to showcase each scoped pole, it’s status in the project lifecycle and any issues or problems we discovered. Further, we were able to track our team’s progress to optimize any inefficiencies that would affect the final product.
